Split names with Text to Columns
A well-designed spreadsheet will split first names and surnames into separate columns. This way, we are able to sort or filter by either of these.
What do we do when someone has entered both first and last names into a single column? Well, we could use formulae to perform the split, but Excel's Text to Columns feature provides an easier approach.
Select the column and make sure that at least two columns to the right of the selected column do not contain data. In Excel 2000/XP/2003, choose Data | Text. In Excel 2007, choose Data | Data Tools | Text to Columns (Alt+AE).
On Step 1 of the Convert Text to Columns Wizard, set Original Data Type to Delimited, then choose Next >. On Step 2, set the Delimiter to Space, then choose Finish. We have now split the names into separate columns.
